Seal 6: Seal of approval for Hi-Tech Touring and Sedan newcomers

The all-new BYD Seal 6 range introduces Australia’s most advanced plug-in hybrid Sedan and Touring pairing, combining stylish electric-first daily driving with long-distance flexibility made possible by BYD’s latest Dual Mode (DM) 5.0 Super Hybrid technology.

They are part of BYD’s commitment to expand its local lineup with new energy vehicles made to suit Australian lifestyles, budgets and unique driving conditions – including driving beyond 1,000kms on Australian roads a single tank and fully-charged battery.

The all-new Seal 6 Sedan is available in Essential grade, the Seal 6 Touring in higher specification Premium grade.

The technology and features loaded into the stylish Seal 6 Touring, priced from $39,990 excluding on-road costs*1, is set to help make wagons cool again. Cool by offering great styling, performance, driving enjoyment, efficiency and load-carrying capability with more than a touch of panache.

The Seal 6 Sedan provides a new-entry point for traditional sedan lovers. It also has the latest in BYD’s new energy powertrain technology and is priced from a compelling $34,990 excluding on-road costs*1.

BYD Australia Chief Operating Officer Stephen Collins said it is important for BYD to keep expanding its lineup to help more Australians make the switch to intelligent Dual Mode Super Hybrids and pure electric vehicles.

“At the end of the day, not everybody wants an SUV. There are loyal sedan and wagon customers in the market that have certain requirements.

“We have positioned both the Seal 6 Sedan and Seal 6 Touring to buyers who love traditional design but want to be part of the new energy revolution,” Mr Collins said.

“The Seal 6 Touring in high-spec Premium grade is, in particular, a sensational car to look at, sit in and drive. It makes wagons cool again.”

Design: Two body styles, two grades, two distinct characters
The Seal 6 Sedan is defined by its low, flowing proportions and efficiency-led design, offering a classic three-box silhouette that prioritises refinement and privacy.

Ocean-inspired body lines, a sharply sculpted lower front fascia and BYD’s signature “Deep Sea Eyes” L-shaped LED headlights give both Sedan and Touring a confident yet understated presence.

A fashioned lower waistline and semi-hidden door handles provide a lovely contrast between flush and sculptured surfaces, imparting a sense of modernity and style.

A wave theme for the taillights completes the ocean design language. Both Sedan and Touring ride on distinctive alloy wheels: clean and crisp piano black multi-spoke 17-inch design for Sedan, and five-spoke rotor swirl 18-inch for Touring.

With an ultra-low drag coefficient of just 0.255, the Sedan’s aerodynamics play a direct role in maximising electric range and overall energy efficiency. This is achieved through a comprehensive, vehicle-wide aerodynamic optimisation strategy that carefully manages airflow from front to rear.

At the front, a low, rounded bumper reduces initial air resistance, while ahead of the front wheels aerodynamically optimised wind deflectors minimise drag losses caused by tyre rotation and wheel-arch turbulence.

Additional efficiency gains come from the active air intake grille, which reduces unnecessary air entry into the engine bay when cooling demand is low, lowering aerodynamic losses.

The large angle between the bonnet and windscreen allows airflow to remain closely attached to the body surface, promoting smooth, laminar flow over the cabin.

Semi-concealed door handles further reduce airflow disturbance along the vehicle sides, minimising drag-inducing turbulence.

Beneath the vehicle, carefully managed underbody airflow ensures smooth passage of air, aided by an integrated diffuser to help reduce pressure differentials.

Both Sedan and Touring ride on a 2,790mm wheelbase, and stand out with class-leading dimensions in length (4,840mm), width (1,875mm), and height (1,495mm Sedan; 1505mm Touring). The result is an open and airy cabin which together with the flat floor delivers plenty of comfort and great legroom for rear-seat occupants.

The Sedan’s boot has 491 litres of cargo carrying capacity, nearly tripling in volume to 1,370 litres with rear seats folded.

The Seal 6 Touring builds on the same elegant design language of its sibling, while delivering greater cargo capacity and flexibility for active lifestyles. A slightly taller roofline, durable roof rails, and a power-operated electric tailgate enhance practicality without sacrificing visual sophistication.

The Touring offers 670 litres of luggage space, expanding to 1,535 litres with the rear seats folded, making it ideal for families, travel, or recreational gear.

Despite its taller, more versatile wagon body shape, the Seal 6 Touring achieves an impressive drag coefficient of 0.284, a highly competitive result for a Touring-style vehicle. This is made possible by applying many of the Sedan’s aerodynamic principles, adapted to suit the Touring’s increased rear volume.

At the rear, a distinctive airflow separation design ensures rapid and controlled detachment of air, limiting wake turbulence created by the extended cargo area.

Interior Design: Calm, connected and purposefully premium
Inside, the Seal 6 range features a wraparound cockpit design that creates a strong sense of space and visual continuity. A fully digital driving environment is standard, supported by an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.8-inch central touchscreen, with wireless Apple CarPlay*2 and Android Auto*3 across all variants.

The Seal 6 Touring promotes a relaxed and refined experience on every journey with heated and ventilated synthetic leather front seats, six-way power-adjustable with memory for the driver and four-way power-adjustable for passenger, plus panoramic sunroof.

Performance & Driving efficiency: BYD DM 5.0 Super Hybrid
At the heart of the Seal 6 is BYD’s DM-i 5.0 platform, representing the latest evolution of BYD’s Super Hybrid technology.

Most conventional hybrid vehicles rely on the petrol engine as the primary source of propulsion, with the electric motor used mainly to assist during acceleration or to improve fuel efficiency.

BYD’s DM-i 5.0 platform takes the opposite approach. The electric motor drives the front wheels for most driving scenarios, while the petrol engine is deployed selectively and strategically, operating only when it can do so with maximum efficiency.

In real-world driving, this electric-first philosophy delivers a quiet, EV-like experience for everyday use, with instant electric torque from standstill and significantly reduced engine noise and vibration. For many owners, the petrol engine may not engage at all during normal daily commutes.

Designed from the ground up for efficiency, the system pairs a highly optimised 1.5-litre Atkinson-cycle petrol engine with electric drive motors and BYD’s LFP Blade Battery.

The petrol engine achieves an exceptional 46 per cent thermal efficiency, which means nearly half of the fuel’s energy is converted into useful power, placing it among the most efficient production engines in the world and significantly reducing fuel consumption during extended journeys.

Combined system power output for Seal 6 Sedan Essential is 130kW; with the range-topping Seal 6 Touring Premium with its larger battery delivering a combined output of 163kW.

Blade Battery
BYD’s innovative Blade Battery technology represents a major advancement in battery design, delivering industry-leading safety, durability and efficiency – particularly in plug-in hybrid applications where batteries are required to perform more frequently and more intensively in everyday driving.

Unlike conventional battery packs that rely on bulky module structures, BYD’s Blade Battery uses an ultra-slim, elongated cell design that allows cells to be integrated directly into the vehicle structure, known as Cell-to-Chassis (CTC). This space-efficient architecture improves energy utilisation while enhancing overall vehicle rigidity, supporting both dynamic performance and occupant safety.

At the core of the Blade Battery is Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) chemistry, chosen for its exceptional thermal stability and long-term durability. LFP chemistry is inherently more resistant to overheating and thermal runaway than nickel-based alternatives, making it ideally suited to the repeated charge-and-discharge cycles typical of plug-in hybrid driving. In real-world use, this translates to greater peace of mind, particularly for customers who regularly rely on electric-only driving for daily commutes.

Safety remains a defining characteristic of Blade Battery technology. The design has been subjected to some of the most severe testing protocols in the global automotive industry, including nail penetration and high-load crush tests, where it has demonstrated an exceptional ability to resist fire and structural failure.

Fuel efficiency and electric range
Powered by BYD’s latest DM-i 5.0 Super Hybrid technology, the Seal 6 range sets new benchmarks for driving efficiency and real-world usability. By prioritising electric-first operation and intelligent energy management, Seal 6 delivers outstanding range and remarkably low fuel consumption across the lineup.

The Seal 6 Essential makes use of a 10kWh Blade Battery, and following real-world testing on Australian roads, delivers a driving range well in excess of 1,000 kms on a single tank (65L) and fully-charged battery. Electric-only driving range is 55kms*4 according to the WLTP test cycle, with 1.1L/100kms5 fuel consumption achieved with a minimum 25 per cent state of charge (SoC) using the NEDC test cycle.

The Seal 6 Premium Touring incorporates a larger 19kWh Blade Battery, which in turn offers 100kms4 of electric-only driving according to the WLTP test cycle and 0.8L/100kms*5 combined fuel consumption using the NEDC test cycle. Like the Sedan, the Touring has also been tested on Australian roads, where it was also able to complete more than 1,000kms on a single tank (65L) and fully-charged battery.

Three intelligent driving modes
Both the Seal 6 Sedan and Seal 6 Touring are offered exclusively in front-wheel drive, with the super hybrid power unit automatically transitioning between three intelligent operating modes to maximise efficiency and performance:

> EV Pure Electric Mode: the petrol engine is switched off and the Seal 6 is driven by its electric motor from the stored battery power. This is perfect in stop-start traffic and low to medium urban speeds, offering silent and smooth driving and instant response with zero fuel consumption.

>HEV Series Mode: the petrol engine does not drive the wheels. Instead, it acts as a portable power station, generating power for the electric motor that in turn drives the wheels, with the ICE also able to recharge the battery at the same time. This is ideal at medium road speeds, when smoothness, quietness and instant response is desired.

>HEV Parallel Mode: The motor and the petrol engine work together in harmony to drive the wheels at the same time. The combined output assists while sustaining highway speeds where greater energy loss is experienced running in purely electric mode. Intelligent integration and software management also allows the ICE to continue charging the battery at the same time.

From the driver’s perspective, it’s seamless. No manual switching required as the intelligent DM Super Hybrid goes about its business.

Both Seal 6 variants ride on MacPherson front suspension and multi-link rear suspension to deliver stability, comfort and confident handling across both body styles.

Instant electric torque ensures responsive acceleration, while carefully tuned chassis dynamics prioritise ride comfort and refinement.

Safety & Technology
Every Seal 6 is built around BYD’s ultra-safe LFP Blade Battery, engineered for long-term durability and proven through extreme real-world testing, including heavy-truck crush and nail penetration tests. The battery forms part of the vehicle’s Cell to Chassis (CtC) platform to promote a low centre of gravity and increase torsional stiffness.

A comprehensive suite of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) are standard, using advanced sensing and control systems. These intelligent systems work seamlessly in the background to improve driver awareness, support informed decision-making and help mitigate potential hazards before they arise.

Features include Adaptive Cruise Control6 with intelligent speed regulation and traffic sign recognition, helping maintain safe, consistent progress in varying traffic conditions.

Forward Collision Warning6 may provide collision warnings and active braking intervention when a potential frontal impact is detected, while Blind Spot Detection*6 can enhance awareness of surrounding traffic with pedestrian crossing alerts, collision warnings and door opening alerts designed to protect occupants and vulnerable road users.

Further support comes from Lane Departure Assist6, which helps reduce blind-spot risks during lane transitions, and Child Presence Detection6, which can alert the driver via both the vehicle and mobile app, with automatic climate control intervention if a child is detected inside the vehicle.

All Seal 6 variants also come with seven airbags as standard: front for driver and passenger, side for driver and front passenger, far-side between front seat occupants, as well as side curtain airbag front and rear.

All BYD vehicles sold in Australia come with an extensive factory warranty: 6 years/150,000kms for Vehicle; 8 years/160,000kms for Traction Battery and 8 years/150,000kms for the Drive Unit.
